Stockholm CC entered a team in the Madrid CC’s annual charity T20 tournament in La Manga, Spain. With matches held of 3 days (April 12th to 14th), the touring party was; Chenna, Chris, Hamish, Harsha, Karl, Kishore, Sampat, Santhosh, Suman, Syam, and Viswa.

Travelling down on the 11th, at a time when most normal people should still be asleep, the team surprisingly arrived with 11 players.  And were able to have a quick net in the afternoon to shake off the effects of the long journey.

Stockholm CC was placed in Group B, along with Madrid CC, La Manga CC and CDP.

First up on Friday was CDP from the UK.  Losing the toss CDP batted first.  Perhaps with a few nerves and being unused to the wicket CDP got off to a flyer scoring 30 runs in the first 3 overs. But then our spinners Suman and Syam took back control and we changed momentum in our favour.  With 5 overs to go it looked like we would contain them to a sub-par score. But our concentration failed us and we took our foot off and CDP snuck away to a score of 175 after their 20 overs.  In reply Kishore and Santhosh made great contributions with the bat and we finished our innings with 149.

In the first match on Saturday morning we played the hosts – Madrid CC. Winning the toss,  we batted first with a slightly rejigged the batting lineup and put on a comfortable 164  in our allotted 20 overs.  This time in the field we kept Madrid CC to 129, and notched up our first win of the tournament.

This mean that in our second match of the day against La Manga CC the winner would have a semi final place.  La Manga, a strong batting side, won the toss as decided to bat. We started sharply, getting a run out in the first over. However, that was the last wicket to fall for some time as a 100 run 2nd wicket partnership and the 1st match of the day had sapped a lot energy, so we were set at target of 176 to win.  Unfortunately we had lost wickets to frequently and though we had a few starts we never really got going. Finishing about 25 runs short.

On Sunday in the 5th & 6th placement game we were up against London Shooters from Hounslow.  Batting first they set a target of 148. Bowling was tight and we fielded well with a couple of runouts and some nice catches.  In reply we batted well, with everyone contributing.  Chris made a tidy 24 off 12 balls. And needing 11 of the last over to win, we came up short 5 short, finishing on 143.

Madrid CC were fantastic hosts arranging a wonderful tournament. The first class facilities at La Manga Club were amazing. It would be a dream to have nets and grounds like that in Sweden.  Already we are looking forward to next year’s tournament.
